PREP SPORTS ROUNDUP: Marshall girls hockey rolls past Fairmont, 8-1

FAIRMONT – Led by a trio of goals in the first and second periods, the Marshall girls hockey team defeated Fairmont 8-1 on Thursday.

The Tigers got on the board right away to start the game, as Logan Sherman got the assist from Leah Schaefer and scored with 15:27 left in the first period before Olivia Peterson found the back of the net from Emelia Barker and Kaitlyn Timm on the power play to make it 2-0. Marshall then brought it to 3-0 in the frame with just 43 seconds left when Tessa Gannott got the assist from Barker.

The Tigers continued its offensive efficiency in the second period, as Timm got on the board 1:11 into the frame on the assist from Jadyn Briffett to push their lead to 4-0. Marshall would make it 5-0 on Sherman’s second goal of the night on the assist from Gannott and Shelby Ormberg before Izabella Hunsley got one past the Fairmont goaltender to extend their advantage to 6-0 after two periods.

In the third, Gannott weaved her way around the Cardinals defense and scored her second of the night to make it 7-0. A couple of minutes later, Regan Loft delivered a pass to Sydney Mauch, who put it in the back of the net to bring the Tigers’ lead to 8-0 with 4:16 left. The Cardinals would score with just over a minute remaining, but Marshall’s early offense was the difference maker in the victory for the Tigers.

As a team, Marshall outshot Fairmont 32-8. Emma Klenken earned the victory in net for the Tigers, stopping seven shots.

Marshall (8-3-1) will face Mankato East/Loyola on Saturday at noon.

FAIRMONT – Led by a hat trick by Tristan VanDeVere and a trio of goals in the second period, the Marshall boys hockey team earned a shutout against Fairmont on Thursday, winning 6-0.

Marshall got on the board to start the game, as VanDeVere got the assist from Jackson Bladholm and put in the back of the net to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead after a period of play.

VanDeVere’s night wasn’t over, though, as the sophomore forward found his second goal of the night in the second period on the assist from Kaleb Welvaert to make it 2-0 before Welvaert would score on his own to extend Marshall’s lead to 3-0. The Tigers then added a goal from Bryson Whyte on the assist from VanDeVere to make it 4-0 after two periods of play.

In the third, VanDeVere would get the pass from Mason Plante and put it past the Cardinals goaltender to complete the hat trick and give Marshall a 5-0 lead before Plante scored on the assist from Chase Beernaert to bring it to the 6-0 final.

Marshall outshot Fairmont 52-15 on the game while earning 15 saves in net in the win.

Marshall (9-1-1) will now play in the Schwan’s Cup Tournament next weekend.

TRACY – The Tracy-Milroy-Balaton boys basketball team defeated Murray County Central 66-63 on Thursday.

Trevor Larson led the way for the Panthers with 21 points while Jake Tauer added 16 and Fritz Landherr had 13. Rylan Fogelson led in rebounds with eight while Tauer led in assists with eight.

Jack Pierson led the way for the Rebels with 16 points while Nate Everson and Spencer Wajer each added 14 and Noah Boerboom had 10. Pierson led in rebounds with nine while Cameron Kresko led in assists with four.

MCC (5-2) will face Dawson-Boyd on Dec. 29 at SMSU at 10 a.m. while TMB (5-2) will play Cedar Mountain on Dec. 28 in Windom at 1:30 p.m.

Carter Shields led a balanced scoring attack for the Warriors with 12 points.

Matt Onken led Marshall with 19 points, while Noah Puetz finished with 14 points.

CANBY — No. 1-ranked Minneota remained unbeaten on Thursday night with a 69-43 win over Canby.

Thomas Hennen led Minneota with 20 points.

Logan Sussner added 14 points and 12 rebounds in the win, while Jacob Hennen finished with 10 points.

Ethan Thovson scored 16 points on five 3-pointers to lead Canby.

Minneota (6-0) will host the Candy Cane Classic this weekend, which will begin with a matchup tonight against Westbrook-Walnut Grove. Canby (2-4) will face Sioux Valley (S.D.) on Saturday in the Swiftel Center Basketball Classic held in Brookings, S.D.

GRANITE FALLS — Yellow Medicine East came up short in an overtime battle against Paynesville Area on Thursday night, as the Bulldogs defeated the Sting 97-86.

YME had a pair of game-winning attempts in the final seconds of regulation, but couldn’t get them to fall. PA opened the extra period on an 8-0 run to help seal the victory.

Corbin Froelich scored 35 points to lead Paynesville Area, while Sam Oehrlein added 24 points.

Carter Sneller led YME with 22 points, nine rebounds and 12 assists, while Dalton Anderson added 18 points and 11 rebounds in the loss.

YME (0-6) will host MACCRAY on Jan. 4.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — The Marshall offense couldn’t get its shot to fall across the border, losing 46-31 to Sioux Falls Washington.

Just three players scored in the game for Marshall. Jordyn Hilgemann led the Tigers, scoring 25 of the team’s 31 points.

Emily Meier added four points and six rebounds in the loss.

Marshall (5-3) will face Anoka on Dec. 27 in a game played at Southwest Minnesota State University.

YME’s first lead in the game came with just over four minutes remaining in the second half.

Mackenzie Dyrdahl led the Sting with 14 points and six rebounds.

Madison Hinz added nine points, while Sam Anderson recorded eight points, 11 rebounds and five assists.

Kiana Imes scored 10 points to lead Lakeview.

Abby Hennen recorded 26 points, eight rebounds and five assists to lead Minneota.

Brooke Thomsen led RTR with nine points.
