SMSU VOLLEYBALL: Mustangs sweep past Minot State

MINOT, N.D. – The Southwest Minnesota State women’s volleyball team broke a two-match losing streak with a sweep over Minot State on Friday night at the Minot State Dome.

The Mustangs improve to 14-7 overall and 9-4 in the conference while Minot State moves to 10-12 overall and 4-9 in the conference after the Mustangs swept (25-14, 25-6, 25-13).

Taylor Reiss led the Mustangs with a match-high 17 kills and a .615 hitting percentage followed by seven kills from Meg Schmidt. Sarina Smith recorded six kills with a .667 hitting percentage. Emma Thomssen had 35 assists on the night and Kaylee Burmeister dished out 17 digs for a team-high.

The Mustangs utilized a 7-0 run in the first set to go up 19-11. The Mustangs earned a 20-13 lead before three consecutive kills, one from Reiss and two from Meg Schmidt would give the Mustangs a 23-14 edge. Minot State would commit to errors to end the set, Mustangs 25-14.

Mustangs jumped to an early lead after a 15-0 run to never look back for a 25-6 final score to set two. Mustangs recorded a .520 hitting percentage in set two with one error.

Set three opened with the Mustangs going on a 6-0 run to earn a 8-2 lead. The Mustangs capitalized on their lead with three consecutive kills from Reiss to jump to a 19-8 lead. Minot State went on a late 3-0 to attempt to close in on the Mustangs at 24-13 before the match ended with an attack error from Minot State.

The Mustangs improve their undefeated record to 9-0 in the series history against Minot State. All nine matches were Mustangs sweeps.

SMSU travels to UMary on Saturday for a 11 a.m. match before returning home to host four-consecutive matches.
