PREP SPORTS ROUNDUP: Wabasso uses quick start to defeat Cedar Mountain

MORGAN — Wabasso defeated Cedar Mountain 3-0 on Thursday.

Maddy Guetter led Wabasso with 16 kills and eight digs, along with two aces and two blocks.

Megan Rothmeier recorded a team-high 13 digs, while Jenna Frank led the Rabbits with 27 assists.

Wabasso (2-1) will compete at a tournament in Montevideo on Saturday.

GRANITE FALLS — Minneota earned a 3-0 sweep over Yellow Medicine East on Thursday night.

It was a balanced offensive attack for the Vikings, as Lydia Sussner led with 14 kills followed by Natalee Rolbiecki with 11 kills.

Morgan Kockelman kept the offense moving with 37 set assists.

Morgan Hennen recorded a team-high 16 digs, while Sussner had four blocks to lead the Vikings.

Meeghen Dahlager recorded nine kills and 13 digs to lead YME.

Minneota and YME will compete in the Southwest Challenge, beginning this evening in Marshall.

ADRIAN — Adrian outlasted Westbrook-Walnut Grove on Thursday, defeating the Chargers in five sets.

Kelsey DeSmith led the way for WWG with 11 kills. Grace Woelber added three service aces, eight digs and 23 set assists in the loss.

Camryn Bunting had 10 blocks for the Chargers.

WWG (2-1) hosts its home tournament on Saturday.

FAIRMONT — Marshall defeated Fairmont 4-1 on Thursday.

The Tigers scored two goals in each half.

Eli Salisbury and Mazin Abdallah got the Tigers on the board in the first half, while Mookae Stee and Nick Kayser scored after intermission.

The Tigers had an 11-4 advantage in shots on goal in the win. Tristan VanDeVere saved three of Fairmonts four shots on goal.

Marshall (4-0-1) hosts New Ulm on Tuesday.

Marshall 3

MARSHALL — Luverne defeated Marshall 4-3 on Thursday.

The Tigers got two wins in singles action and one victory in doubles.

Marshall senior Kelsey Boerboom defeated Ainslie Robinson 1-6, 6-3, 6-0 in the No. 2 match. At No. 4, freshman Eden Knudson beat Liz Kelm 6-0, 5-7, 10-8.

Marshall got its doubles win from Leah Matzner and Alexis Moat, who defeated Brynn Thier and Mela Jarchow 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.

Marshall (3-2) hosts Redwood Valley on Sept. 13.

CROSS COUNTRY

Bauman-Rovn

MINNETRISTA — The Marshall girls cross country team finished fifth in the Bauman-Rovn Invitational at Gale Woods Farm on Thursday.

Marshall had a team score of 157, placing the Tigers behind Edina, Eden Prairie, Willmar and Lakeville South.

Jersey Leyson led the Tigers, finishing with a 10th-place time of 19:23.90.

Kate Bucher was not far behind at 19:35.90 for 13th place. Bellamy Sukalksi placed with a 19th-place time of 19:56.50, followed by Natalee Sample (20:09.20) in 27th.

Saphi McFarquhar (24:16.3) completes Marshall’s score by placing 88th.

The Marshall boys finished 11th as a team with 306 points.

Zach Matzner led the Tigers, placing 14th with a time of 16:38.20.

Marshall boys coach Brian Leibfried was pleased with how the junior runner was able to stay near the front of the pack against some of the best the section and state have to offer.

“This was a very competitive meet for us, with five section competitiors and other top teams in state,” Leibfried said. “It was good to see him battle up front and stay in front for most of the race.”

Jenson Meyer was the next Marshall runner to finish, placing 58th at 17:52.40. Karter Wasberg (18:20.20) placed 70th, with Landon Wherry (18:46.90) and Damian Caron (18:59.50) in 81st and 83rd, respectively.

Overall, Leibfried added that seven of the team’s 11 runners beat their time from last year’s race at Gale Woods Farm by an average of 50 seconds.

Marshall will host a meet involving a number of area programs on Monday.

Panther

Invitational

TRACY — The MCC/Fulda girls (58 points) won the 21st annual Panther Invitational on Thursday.

Canby/Minneota placed second with 67 points. Lakeview, Tracy-Milroy-Balaton and Wabasso did not have enough runners for a team score.

The Rebels were led by Morgan Gehl, who finished first among girls with a time of 19:06.10.

MCC/Fulda’s other four scoring runners finished in a pack between 16th and 21st overall. Ashley Overgaauw (22:56.10) finished 16th, followed by Amanda Overgaauw in 19th (23:06.50), Josie Harms in 20th (23:15.00) and Ryanna Schreier (23:17.30) in 21st place.

Canby/Minneota was led by Grace Drietz, who placed second with a time of 19:35.40. McKenzie Ruether (21:35.50) finished just outside the Top 5 in sixth place. Faith Traen (22:15.50) added an 11th place finish, while RyAnn Hansen (23:55.20) finished 31st.

Aidyn Bruns (24:01.40) finished the C/M scoring with a 33th-place finish.

Lakeview’s top runner was Sadie Vlaminck, who placed 24th (23:42.70). Faith Louwagie added a 64th-place time of 27:11.40 while Cassandra Louwagie finished in 29:46.70 for 75th place.

TMB was led by Brooke Christian’s 3th-place finish (24:18.50). Makala Lemburg finished 66th (27:30.80), while Caitlyn Devereaux (29:50.10) placed 76th.

Chloe Haven (22:35.90) placed 14th to lead Wabasso. Maddie Hanna (25:18.00) and Genna Rothmeier (25:28.80) finished back to back in 46th and 47th place, respectively. Haley Albu (26:04.70) finished in 52nd place for the Rabbits.

The Canby/Minneota boys (84 points) finished in third place as a team behind Redwood Valley and Worthington.

MCC/Fulda (87 points) placed fourth as a team, followed by Lakeview (207) in seventh and Wabasso (348) in 12th. TMB did not have enough runners for a team score.

Jalyn Ufkin (18:26.80) led the Lancers with a ninth-place finish. Jared Josephson (18:31.40) was not far behind in 11th place. Blake Stoks (18:57.80) finished a few spots back in 14th place. Sean Dilley (19:12.10) and Tristan Biershenk (19:39.60) in 21st and 29th, respectively.

Justin Clarke (18:19.30) paced MCC/Fulda with an eighth-place finish.

Nathan Everson (18:58.50) and Spencer Wajer (19:02.00) finished consecutively in 15th and 16th place, respectively.

Jack Pierson (19:13.50) added a 22nd-place time, while Maverick Beckmann placed 27th with a time of 19:32.70.

Lakeview was led by a 23rd-place time of 19:15.50 from Ben Louwagie. Noah Schmidt placed 28th at 19:33.20. Ethan Schwankl (20:14.70) placed 46th, followed by Andrew Loe (20:46.40) in 53rd place and Cole Arends (22:55.60) finishing 81st.

Wabasso’s top runner was Alex Schmiesing, who placed 72nd at 22:10.70. Ti Trost (23:27.30) took 86th place, followed by Jonathon Donner (23:39.30) in 89th and Nicholas Irlbeck (23:42.60) in 90th. Justin Bernardy (24:11.40) placed 92nd.

TMB was led by Sawyer Schwartz, who finished 45th at 20:14.50. Fritz Landherr (21:25.00) placed 60th, followed by Gabe Struchen (24:16.30) and John Schmitt (24:50.30) in 93rd and 96th, respectively.
