PREP SPORTS ROUNDUP: Tigers pull away from Bluejays late, win 19-18

WASECA – The Marshall and Waseca football teams added another classic chapter to their storied rivalry on Friday night, with the two Big South powerhouses battling it out right to the end. The Tigers faced an early deficit, but worked their way back in the second half and got a key touchdown with a couple minutes to go, earning a thrilling 19-18 victory over the Bluejays.

Marshall coach Terry Bahlmann said it was a great win for their team and felt they were able to make the necessary plays late to get the comeback win.

“It was a great team win,” Bahlmann said. “We got behind early but the kids kept battling and hung with it. We were able to make some big plays and Konnor Aufenthie made some big throws and Jeraco Parsa had some great runs after the catch for us.”

With the Tigers trailing 18-13 going into the fourth quarter, Marshall needed some late-game heroics if it was going to maintain its undefeated season. The Tigers found that through the form of Aufenthie, who led Marshall downfield in the final minutes before connecting with Parsa on a 37-yard pass. The big play helped set up a Bryce Paulsen two-yard run with 2:12 remaining, putting the Tigers back in front at 19-18 – their first and only lead of the game.

Waseca tried to get an answer in the closing minutes, but Paulsen sealed the victory for the Tigers with an interception at the two-yard line.

Bahlmann said he’s proud of the way his players hung in the big moments and gave themselves a chance, especially on the defensive end.

“We had a lot of starters where this was their first big shot at winning a game like this and they handled it well,” Bahlmann said. “I felt as long as we were one play down, we had a shot. We gave up things early but we were able to get four turnovers defensively, which was huge.”

No final stats were provided at press time.

Marshall will now head back home for their homecoming game against St. Peter next Friday at 7 p.m.
