LEGION BASEBALL: Marshall Legion baseball places first at BOLD tournament

BIRD ISLAND – The Marshall Legion baseball team opened up its season with three wins in the BOLD tournament over the weekend, placing first in the tournament. The Mudcats defeated Benson 12-2, West St. Paul 4-3 and New London-Spicer 6-2.

Against Benson, the Mudcats got on the board with four quick runs in the top of the first. After Benson scored in the bottom of the inning, Marshall added four more runs in the top of the second to make it 8-1. Benson added a run of its own in the bottom half of the frame to cut it to 8-2, but Marshall scored four times the rest of the way to earn the 12-2 victory.

Cody Greve led the way for Marshall with a 4 for 5 day at the plate with five RBI while Jackson Hughes added four hits of his own and two RBI and Nick Macchio chipped in a hit and two RBI.

Greve earned the victory on the hill, going six innings while allowing one run on three hits and striking out seven.

Against West St. Paul, both teams traded runs until the top of the third when West St. Paul scored two runs to take a 3-1 lead after three. But Marshall responded with three runs in the bottom half of the fifth to take the lead back at 4-3 and hang on in the final two innings for the win.

Greve led the way for the Mudcats with a 2 for 3 day at the plate while Alex Thompson, Hughes, Parker Terfehr, Jordan Mernaugh and Peyton Grant all added hits, with Grant picking up the lone RBI.

Isaac Schmitt earned the victory on the hill, going seven innings while allowing three runs on seven hits and striking out five.

Against New London-Spicer, the Mudcats took an early 2-1 lead after the first inning before NLS tied things up at 2-2 in the second. Neither team found scoring over the next three innings before Marshall broke out for four runs in the bottom of the sixth to earn the 6-2 victory.

Macchio led the way for Marshall with a 2 for 3 day at the plate with an RBI while Schmitt, Kaleb Welvaert and Terfehr all added a hit and an RBI.

Welvaert earned the victory on the hill, going seven innings while allowing two runs on five hits and striking out two.

Marshall (3-0) will host its annual Wood Bat Tournament on June 22-24.
