GOLF

Fairmont Invite

FAIRMONT – The Marshall boys golf team earned a third place finish out of nine teams at the Fairmont Invite on Saturday, shooting a team score of 331.

Mason Plante led the way for the Tigers with a 77 while Spencer Ehlers shot 78, Landon Frost had 86 and Michael DeVaan shot 90 to round out the scoring.

Marshall coach Kari Ehlers said the course was a good test for the team to place their shots and requires them to think more about their club selections.

“The thing I like about this course is the fact that the boys have to place their shots strategically. Most of the holes are tree lined, and there are many par four dog-legs that require players to hit a club different than ripping a driver,” coach Ehlers said. “I think this type of course definitely separates the better players from those that are used to hitting shots all over the course.”

Coach Ehlers added that Plante and Ehlers had to overcome tough starts to their rounds and rely on their short game to earn pars and was pleased to see improving scores from Frost and DeVaan.

“Mason and Spencer both had a tough start with three and four bogeys to begin the day. Mason hit seven greens in regulation and Spencer only hit three. The duo was forced to rely on their chipping and putting to get some pars on the score card. Now that we are getting about half way through our regular season, our players can’t afford to have so many bogeys and doubles,” coach Ehlers said. “Landon Frost has done a better job of mentally managing the golf course and an 86 was nice to see from him. Our No. 3 player from last year moved away over the summer leaving a hole for someone to fill. I am hoping that Landon can get his score down closer to the 80 mark. Michael DeVaan’s 90 was a good score for him as well.”
