WEDNESDAY SMSU TRACK: Mustangs record strong outing in Mankato Invite

MANKATO – The Southwest Minnesota State women’s and men’s outdoor track & field teams had a strong day competing at the Minnesota State Spring Winter Invitational on Wednesday. The meet was added this week due to expected poor weather around the upper Midwest this weekend.

For the SMSU women’s team, Nikki Atwood captured first place in the 400 meters with a time of 59.17.

Kim Shabino qualified for the finals in the 100 meters with a time of 12.54 before placing third with a time of 12.62.

Hannah Palmeter finished in fifth place in the 5,000 meters with a time of 19:44.46, while Lauryn Ballard ran 27.85 in the 200 meters to finish ninth.

In the field events, Rebecca Manteuffel won the shot put with a toss of 12.65m, her second best mark of the season. She also placed first in the discus at 43.97m.

Angela Prokosch finished second in the hammer throw with a mark of 46.84m.

Rylee Armstrong recorded a 4.8m mark in the long jump to finish in fifth place.

For the men’s team, Hever Valenzuela ran 51.61 in the 400 meters to finish in second place.

Carl Anderson finished third in the 200 meters with a time of 22.96 and then placed fourth in the 100 meters crossing the line at 11.57. Jake Evans was sixth in the 100 meters at 11.77.

Ben Broze ran 16:33.42 to finish ninth in the 5,000 meters, just ahead of Logan Knutson who placed 10th at 16:39.74.

In the long jump, Isaiah Nelson placed second with a personal best 6.43m.

Josh Behning finished third in the discus at 43.43m and also recorded a fourth place finish in the hammer throw at 47.71m. Ashanti Payne was fifth in the hammer at 43.78m.

Behning also finished fourth in the shot put with a throw of 13.46m, with teammate Connor Wigand finishing fifth at 13.29m.

Southwest Minnesota State will next compete on April 20-21 at the Northwestern College Invite in Orange City, Iowa.
