MARSHALL – The Southwest Minnesota State Athletic Department will host the 13th annual “Celebration of Excellence” tonight beginning at 6 p.m. in the Upper Level of the SMSU Conference Center.

The program will honor student-athletes and teams from the 2017-18 academic year, along with special award winners for student-athletes from spring 2017.

The event, which is free and open to the public, includes snacks and beverages. The social begins at 6 p.m., followed by the ceremony starting at 6:30 p.m.

Student-athletes that earned All-NSIC, Academic All-NSIC, national qualifiers, All-American, All-Region, Myles Brand Award honorees, team MVPs, special SMSU faculty and SAAC awards and all 2017-18 senior student-athletes will be honored.

The 2017-18 Female and Male Athletes of the Year will be announced, as well the 2017-18 Female and Male Scholar-Athletes of the Year. The voting includes spring sports of 2017 (baseball, women’s golf, softball, men’s and women’s outdoor track & field and women’s tennis) and the fall and winter sports of the 2017-18 athletic year.

The 2017 volleyball team and the 2017-18 men’s basketball team will also be recognized for qualifying for the NCAA Tournament.

All student-athletes in attendance are encouraged to invite an SMSU faculty or staff member to the program.

An SMSU senior student-athlete will conclude the program with the annual Mustang student-athlete senior speech.
