SMSU MEN’S BASKETBALL: NCAA Division II men’s basketball selection show set for Sunday night

INDIANAPOLIS – The NCAA Division II men’s basketball selection show will air this Sunday via webcast at NCAA.com starting at 9:30 p.m. CST. The top eight teams in each of the eight regions will earn a berth to the 64-team NCAA Division II men’s basketball tournament.

Southwest Minnesota State, which was ranked No. 5 in this week’s NCAA Central Region rankings, is 24-8 overall, after losing in the championship game of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Tournament on Tuesday night to Northern State University.

SMSU will be looking to make its second straight and fifth NCAA Tournament appearance in program history. SMSU won region championships in both 2001 and 2009, while losing in the first round in 2012 and losing in the region championship game last season.

Automatic qualification to the NCAA Tournament will be awarded to the winners of the 24 conferences. The remaining 40 teams are selected at large by the committee.

The eight teams selected to the NCAA Central Region Tournament will play on Mar. 10-11, 13, at a site to be determined. The eight regional champions then head to the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, for the 2018 NCAA Division II Men’s Elite Eight. Play tips off in the quarterfinals on Tuesday, March 20, and concludes with the championship game on Saturday, March 24.

Automatic bids to the NCAA Central Region are granted to the winners of the NSIC, Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association and Great American Conference postseason tournaments, with the remaining five spots awarded on an at-large basis.
