SMSU MEN’S BASKETBALL: Mustangs earn at-large bid to NCAA Tourney for second straight season
INDIANAPOLIS-The Southwest Minnesota State University men’s basketball team has earned the No. 4 seed in the NCAA Central Region Tournament as the 64-team NCAA Division II field was announced on Sunday night.
The eight-team region tournament will be hosted by No. 1 seed Northwest Missouri State University and will be played at Bearcat Arena in Maryville, Missouri, from March 10-13.
SMSU (24-8), champions of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference South Division for the second straight season, will be making its second straight NCAA tournament appearance and fifth all-time. The Mustangs will face No. 5 seed Missouri Southern (20-9) in the quarterfinals on Saturday, March 10 at 8:15 p.m.
The semifinals will be played on Sunday, March 11, with the championship game on Tuesday, March 13.
The other quarterfinal match-ups include No. 1 Northwest Missouri State versus No. 8 seed Minnesota State, No. 3 seed Southern Nazarene (Okla.) versus No. 6 seed St. Cloud State and No. 2 seed Northern State vs. No. 7 seed Washburn (Kan.).
SMSU, which lost in championship game of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference tournament championship this past Tuesday, has an all-time record of 8-4 in the NCAA tournament, which includes two NCAA region championships and one region championship runner-up.
