YOUTH HOCKEY: Marshall youth hockey teams hit final regular season stretch

MARSHALL – The Marshall Area Hockey Association began winding up the regular season with a full weekend of hockey. The Squirt A and B teams participated in the lone weekend tournament, traveling to Brookings (S.D.). Pee Wee A and B, as well as the 12U girls will begin District 4 tournament play this week.

Pee Wee A

The Pee Wee A squad wrapped up the regular season two games over the weekend, defeating Lakes Area 5-0 on Saturday before falling to Luverne 5-2 on Sunday.

In Saturday’s win, the Tigers were led by Lincoln Mellenthin’s fourth shutout of the season, recording 10 saves. Jared Reinsma scored four of the tiger goals while Andrew Seanor netted the fifth goal. Joey Fossum, Chase Mellenthin and Malachi Klemm each pitched in with an assist.

On Sunday, Reinsma scored both goals in the loss with an assist from Fossum. Lincoln Mellenthin made 29 saves in the effort.

The third seed Tigers will open against sixth-seeded Redwood Area on February 15 at 8:30 pm at the Red Baron Arena and Event Center.

Pee Wee B

Pee Wee B split the weekend, falling to New Ulm/Sleepy Eye 2-4 on Friday before defeating Lakes Area 10-1 on Saturday. Pee Wee B will also play host to the District 4 tournament, opening with Lakes Area on Thursday night at 8:15 pm.

12U Girls

The 12U Girls team finished the regular season with a pair of wins, defeating Lakes Area 8-0 on Saturday and Redwood Area 12-0 on Sunday. The Tigers will travel to Fairmont on Friday to face Windom in the first round of the District 4 tournament.

10U Girls

On Saturday, the 10U Girls squad defeated St. Peter Le Sueur 3-1. Aubree Metheny led the way with a pair of goals while Kendal Beernaert added the third. On Sunday, the Tigers traveled to Mankato and came up just short, falling 4-3. Mady Girard scored a pair of goals while Metheny netted her third on the weekend. Belle Deutz posted a 91% save average, stopping 44 shots on the day.

Squirt A

The Squirt A team went 1-2-1 and finished in seventh place at the Dakota Premiere Classic in Brookings, S.D., ending the weekend with a 13-2 win over Oahe Area. On Friday, the Tigers fell to Brookings 2-1 with Owen Renslow scoring the lone goal. On Saturday, Squirt A fell to Waseca 3-0 before finishing pool play with a 3-3 tie against Freemont (Neb.) Renslow had a goal and an assist while Tyler Welsh and Ricky Crum each added a goal.

On Sunday, the Tigers defeated the Capitals 13-2. Renslow tallied three goals and an assist and Rheed Domeier Gosklags had two goals and three assists. Scott Lane scored a goal and added two assists while Crum pitched in with a goal and an assist. Jake Johnson scored a hat trick in the win while Tate Mellenthin, Brenden Weller and Gavin Falde each netted a goal. Welsh, Easton Lasrsen and Carson Kopitski helped with an assist each. Nathan Lenz tallied a total of 56 saves over the tournament.

Squirt B

Last weekend, the Squirt B team went 1-3 at the Dakota Premiere Classic in Brookings, finishing in eighth place. The Tigers defeated Brookings Blue 7-4 on Friday to open the tournament. Austin Husby scored a hat trick to lead Squirt B while Treyton Roberts, Max England and Xander Oey each added a goal. Austin Quist came away with a pair of assists while Henry Horvath and Grady Meulebroek each had one.

On Saturday the Tigers fell to Brandon Valley 9-1. Husby scored the lone goal with an assist from Gabe Widboom. Squirt B continued on Sunday, falling to Brookings White 4-2 with goals from Husby and Quist, and assists from Aidan Reinhart and Widboom. The Tigers ended the tournament with a 3-2 loss to Brookings Red. Husby netted both goals in the loss with an assist from Horvath. Goalie Carson Becker made a combined 51 saves on the weekend.
