SMSU WRESTLING: Back-to-back pins push SMSU wrestling to dual victory over Minot State

MARSHALL – Southwest Minn State (7-6, 2-4 NSIC) used a pair of back-to-back pins to weather a string of losses in the first six bouts of the night and finished strong on the way to a 23-17 win over Minot State (2-14, 0-5 NSIC) on Saturday afternoon in the PE Gym.

Minot State earned a win by decision to open the dual, giving the Beavers a 3-0 lead. Marco Ramirezlazos of Minot State then used a last second takedown in the final ten seconds of the third period to steal a 4-3 decision over Brock Buysse at 133.

Trailing 6-0, the Mustangs got a spark when Trent Butcher (141) grabbed his third pin of the year to even the match.

SMSU then took its first lead of the dual just moments later as Justin Haneke (149) put up his second straight win by fall and his tenth of the season, pinning his opponent in just 22 seconds. The win improves Haneke’s record to 17-7 overall and 3-2 against NSIC opponents on the season.

SMSU then dropped back-to-back decisions as Minot State evened the match at 12-12 following the 165 weight class.

The Mustangs regained their advantage as Griffin Osing (174) nearly pinned his opponent on multiple occasions and ultimately won by tech fall with a 15-0 decision.

SMSU added to its advantage as Cole Hennen (184) held onto a 3-1 lead late to secure his fourth NSIC victory of the season.

Jackson Ryan (197) earned a two-point reversal to go ahead 5-2 in the final minute of the third period and was able to hold off his opponent on the way to a 5-3 decision, giving the Mustangs a 23-12 lead to clinch the dual win.

Southwest Minnesota State will host its final home dual of the season next Friday night against Minnesota State beginning at 7 p.m. in the PE Gym. SMSU will wrap up its 2017-18 dual schedule next Saturday evening when it travels to face MSU Moorhead also beginning at 7 p.m.
