PREP WRESTLING: Marshall earns sweep in home triangular

MARSHALL – The Marshall wrestling team has come flying out of the starting gates, controlling each match they compete in. Tuesday night was no different, as the Tigers continued their dominant start to the season with another sweep, defeating New Ulm 45-28 and Quad County 69-10.

Marshall coach Justin Bouwman credited the successful start to their team’s tight-knit bond as well as the consistency from his wrestlers each meet.

“This group of kids have been really close together. With only one senior, they’re not too far apart, and they’re close-knit. They do a lot of other stuff together, they play a lot of other sports together, and I think that’s really helping and showing,” Bouwman said. “And the young guys are being consistent for us and that’s the biggest thing; our young guys are consistent and then we know what we’re going to get from our upper weights and older guys.”

Against New Ulm, the Tigers got on the board when Hsa Khee Lar took down Jackson Bode with a pin in 1:30 to put Marshall up 6-4 in the match. The Tigers then got two more consecutive pins from Hsa La Eh (120 weight class, 0:50) and Lucas Hodges (126 weight class, 1:54) to take a 18-4 lead in the match. La Eh’s pin was the 75th career win for the sophomore while Hodges’ win was the 25th pin in the junior’s career.

New Ulm wouldn’t go away, however, as the Eagles got four consecutive victories, including two pins, to retake the lead at 25-18. Marshall answered right back with a victory from Elijah Sterner in the 160 weight class before getting forfeit victories by Zach Stahl, Wyatt Martin and Jaiden Bahr to take a 39-25 lead in the match.

New Ulm got one final win from Colby Wenniger before Marshall’s Cole Felcyn won by forfeit to close out the 45-28 for the Tigers.

The Tigers closed the match with a matchup against Quad County. Conner Roth got things started with a win by major decision before Khee Lar won by technical fall to give Marshall a quick 9-0 lead in the match. After a forfeit victory for La Eh in the 120 weight class, Marshall got three consecutive pins from Hodges (1:09), Andrew Williams (4:54) and Grant Louwagie (1:02) to extend the Tigers lead to 33-0.

Quad County got on the board with a forfeit victory for Ayden Friese, but the Tigers earned a string of forfeits and pins from Hughes (2:30) and Bahr (0:17) to cap the 69-10 victory.

Quad County squared off against the Eagles in the meet’s first match of the night, getting a pin from Bryce Schmidt and forfeit victories from Hunter Wolf and Cole Fischer, but fell to New Ulm 48-18.

Bouwman said their key during meets is getting pins early and that’s what helps them reach the next level in their scores.

“We’re kind of a pinning group,” Bouwman said. “When we get ahead and get going and stick to our game plan, our pins come, and that’s what usually gets us our big wins and our big scores, it’s because our kids like to pin and get off the mat.”

Marshall will continue its homestand with a triangular against Jackson County Central and Worthington on Thursday at 5 p.m. Bouwman said they need to clean up a few things before Thursday as both teams will present a challenge.

“It’s going to be tough; Jackson and Worthington are both very good,” Bouwman said. “We’ve got a few things to work on, just the little things techniquewise that we haven’t been able to cover all the time and we’ll get them all worked up and ready to go.”
