PREP SPORTS ROUNDUP: Knights boys basketball cruise past Edgerton

TYLER – The Russell-Tyler-Ruthton Knights jumped on Edgerton and never let up en route to a 83-25 victory on Tuesday.

RTR jumped out to a 15-0 lead before spectators could settle in to their seats. Edgerton finally got on the board with 14:03 left in the first half to make it a 15-3 game.

A Garrett Kern 3-pointer put the Knights up 22-3. With the Knights holding a 28-3 Edgerton knocked down another 3-pointer to make it a 28-6 game.

Jonah Johnson converted a 3-point play to put the Knights up 31-6.

At the half the Knights held a commanding 52-15 lead. Westin Kirk had 20 points and eight rebounds in the first half for the Knights.

Kirk finished the game with 24 points, nine rebounds and five assists. Kern finished the game with 22 points. Cooper Hansen finished with 12 points and six assists. Carter Hansen finished with eight points.

With the win the Knights improved to 13-0 on the season. They’ll be back in action tonight against Lac qui Parle Valley.

MORGAN – The Wabasso boys basketball team fell to Cedar Mountain/Comfrey 87-63 on Monday.

Cooper Taylor led the way for the Rabbits with 19 points while Tony Franta added 13 and Brock Rohlik had 10. Franta led in rebounds with eight while Franta and Myles Zeug led in assists with five each.

Wabasso (1-11) will face Sleepy Eye on Friday at 7:15 p.m.

WINDOM – The Marshall boys hockey team defeated Windom Area 4-1 on Monday.

The Tigers got things going in the first period when Elliot Holland found the back of the net off the assist from Noah Versaevel to put Marshall up 1-0. Mason Plante then pushed Marshall’s lead to 2-0 early in the second with a power-play goal on the assist from Tristan VanDeVere, but Windom answered with a goal of its own from Ethan Becker to cut the deficit to 2-1 at the end of two.

Midway through the third, the Tigers retook the lead when Plante found the back of the net for the second time to extend the lead to 3-1. Plante wasn’t finished as he scored an empty-netter late in the period to complete the hat trick and the three-goal victory for the Tigers.

Marshall outshot the Eagles 30-19 on the night. Dominik Caspers earned the win in the net, stopping 18 shots.

The Tigers (14-4) extends their winning streak to six games and will face Fairmont on Thursday at 7 p.m.

WINDOM – The Marshall girls hockey team defeated Windom Area 5-0 on Monday.

The Tigers got things started midway through the first period on a goal from Sydney Mauch off the assist from Olivia Peterson and Leah Schaefer to give Marshall a 1-0 lead after one.

Marshall would then added a pair of goals in the second period, when Courtney Mauch finding the back of the net before Peterson scored off the assist from Rachel VanKeulen to push the Tigers lead to 3-0 after two.

VanKeulen later found the net in the third, putting in two goals of her own to bring it to the 5-0 shutout victory.

Marshall outshot Windom Area 55-14 on the game. Emma Klenken earned the victory in net for the Tigers, stopping all 14 shots she faced.

The Tigers (10-9) will face Fairmont on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

HENDRICKS – The Marshall gymnastics team took second in their dual meet on Monday, falling to Hendricks 130.750-117.625.

Saphi McFarquhar led the way for the Tigers with a third place finish on vault (8.625), fifth place on the uneven bars (7.575), third place on the floor exercise (9.025) and a score of 6.750 on the balance beam to take third in the all-around (31.975).

Jordyn Kack placed third on the beam with a score of 7.350 while Mikayla Chesley took fifth on the floor with a 7.725 and Taliya McFarquhar took fifth on vault with a score of 8.425.

Marshall will compete on Thursday at home against Windom Area at 6 p.m.

HECTOR – The Wabasso boys basketball team fell to Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart 67-50 on Saturday.

Brock Rohlik led the way for the Rabbits with 14 points while Cooper Taylor added 12. Tony Franta led in assists with seven while adding nine rebounds.
