MARSHALL – The Marshall gymnastics team not only improved on their season-high score during their meet on Thursday, they shattered it.

The Tigers defeated Windom/Mountain Lake Area 131.725-124.150, and Marshall coach Larvita McFarquhar was extremely pleased with her team’s performance.

“They did such a great job. They stepped up and did what they’re supposed to do, and that’s all I can ask for,” she said. “They’ve been working on new skills and I’m just really proud of them.”

Saphi McFarquhar led the way for the Tigers with a second place finish on vault (8.775), first on the uneven bars (8.525), first on the balance beam (8.950), first on the floor exercise (9.475) and first in the all-around (35.725) while Taliya McFarquhar placed fourth on vault (8.700), second on bars (7.675), third on beam (7.900), second on floor (8.650) and second in all-around (32.775).

Mikayla Chesley placed third on vault (8.750) while Leah Matzner placed fifth on vault (8.600) and Jordyn Kack placed fourth on bars (7.200). Kaitlyn Matzner placed second on beam (8.400), fifth on floor (8.225) and fourth in all-around (31.150) to add to the Marshall effort.

Coach McFarquhar said she was happy with their teamwork as a group and their camaraderie as a whole.

“I love their teamwork and camaraderie with each group, even on other teams,” she said. “Just cheering them on and boosting their spirit and confidence.”

Marshall will compete on Jan. 25 against Pipestone Area at 6 p.m. Coach McFarquhar said their biggest takeaway will be making sure to stick their beam routines and increase the level on the vault.

“Still sticking our beam; a couple of people fell off, but it’s about going back in there and working harder,” she said. “The biggest thing is upping the vault level, because we’re not starting at a 10 value, we’re starting at a 9.2 or 9, so if we can get that up then we can be good contenders.”
