PIPESTONE – A game that was billed as a Big South Conference showdown turned out to be a Big South Conference beatdown. The Marshall Tigers did what they wanted, when they wanted during their 78-45 victory over the Pipestone Area Arrows on Friday.

Tyl Woelber opened the scoring for the Arrows off the opening tip to give the home team a quick lead. The Tigers wasted little time in making themselves feel at home. A Trey Lance basket started an 11-0 run for the Tigers to open up an 11-2 lead.

“It was very important,” Marshall coach Travis Carroll said. “Pipestone has a very good basketball team. You are playing on the road in their gym. It’s important to go on a run early in the game and try to get that momentum going in your direction. If they go on an 11-0 run to begin the game in their gym they get the momentum going. Stopping that momentum can be difficult. It was important to start fast.”

Lance picked up his second foul of the game at the 10:40 mark with the Tigers holding an 11-9 lead. With Lance on the bench Matthew Onken stepped up and scored six straight points for the Tigers to give Marshall a 17-9 lead.

With the Tigers holding a 18-11 lead and Lance back on the floor, Bryce Paulsen scored six straight points to push Marshall’s lead to 24-13.

Lance picked up his third foul with 4:15 left to play in the first half. With their floor leader on the bench the Tigers responded by going on a 9-0 run to make it a 33-13 game.

“Trey gives us a lot of minutes each night,” Carroll said. “It was nice to see the kids step up during that stretch.”

With 2:28 left to play in the opening half Woelber picked scored for the first time since the opening tip to cut Marshall’s lead to 33-15. Woelber finished the first half with just six points.

“He’s a very good player,” Carroll said. “He’s a guy that’s scored 25 to 30 points in a game before. He’s a guy you have to be aware of. Our guys worked hard on him. He went on a nice run in the second half. There were some things that we could have done better, but overall I think our kids did a good job of contesting his shots.”

A Paulsen corner 3-pointer right before time expired gave Marshall a 38-17 lead at the half.

A Lance bucket opened the scoring in the second half to put Marshall up 40-17. With the Tigers holding a 47-27 lead the Arrows went on an 8-0 run to make it a 47-35 game.

“We lost focus on where people were at,” Carroll said. “They got some uncontested looks. We didn’t do a good job of contesting shots during that stretch. The kids did a better job after that stretch.”

Following the 8-0 run by the Arrows the Tigers went on a 10-2 run to make it a 57-37 game. A Lance three-pointer capped off the run for the Tigers.

Paulsen finished the game with 17 points and seven rebounds. Onken finished with 17 points and six rebounds. Lance finished the game with 13 points.

With the win the Tigers improved to 9-2 on the season. They’ll be back in action next Saturday against Mankato East.

“January is a big month,” Carroll said. “We are trying to get better each game. We are in the middle of the season right now. We don’t want to go to neutral. We want to see if we can get better each game.”
