BIG TEN ATHLETICS: Hmielewski leaves Gopher football team to focus on baseball

MARSHALL – Drew Hmielewski was a three-sport athlete at Marshall High School, playing football, basketball, and baseball for the Tigers. After graduating from MHS in 2016, he had an opportunity to be a two-sport athlete at the Division I level, playing football and baseball at the University of Minnesota.

After redshirting in both sports in his first year on campus and playing sparingly this fall for the football team, Hmielewski has decided to hang up his football cleats to focus on baseball.

He played in nine games for the football team this fall. He did not catch any passes, but did return five punts for 25 yards.

Hmielewski’s father, Chris, played college baseball at Kansas State University and played five seasons professionally in the Montreal Expos organization and in the Northern League.

Hmielewski is an outfielder on the baseball team, and will have four years of eligibility, beginning this spring. Minnesota opens the 2018 season on Feb. 16 at Georgia Tech.
