PREP SPORTS ROUNDUP: Marshall skates past Mankato East, 3-0

MARSHALL – The Marshall girls hockey team got out to a fast start and never looked back, shutting out Mankato East 3-0 on Tuesday night.

The Tigers got things started near the midway mark of the first period, as Rachel VanKeulen fired one into the back of the net to give Marshall a 1-0 lead. A few minutes later, Olivia Peterson joined the scoring fun with 12:36 left to extend the advantage to 2-0.

Not long after, VanKeulen weaved her way towards the net and found her second goal of the night to cap the scoring with 2:14 left in the period.

Marshall goalie Emma Klenken earned the victory in net, stopping all 16 shots she faced. The Tigers outshot the Cougars 37-16 on the night.

Marshall (5-6) will face Fairmont on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

SLAYTON – The Murray County Central girls basketball team fell to Red Rock Central 60-48 on Tuesday.

Montana Beckmann led the way for the Rebels with 12 points while Riley Schmitz had nine and Shelby Christensen and Rachel Van Iperen each had eight. Van Iperen led in rebounds with nine while Alyssa Groves and Amanda Mueke each had six.

MCC (3-5) will face RTR on Friday at 7:15 p.m.

HUTCHINSON — Hutchinson defeated Marshall 54-43 on Tuesday.

Marshall had a one-point lead in the second half, but Hutchinson used a 13-0 run to seal the victory.

“It was a hard-fought, fast-paced game, and both teams were getting up and down the court,” Marshall coach Dan Westby said. “Jordyn did a nice job of getting to the basket tonight. That kept us in it, but the 13-0 run sunk us.”

Marshall (6-1) hosts Sioux Falls Washington on Thursday.
