PREP GIRLS HOCKEY: Tigers fall to Eagles, 2-0

MARSHALL – The Marshall girls hockey team outshot the Windom Area Eagles 28-10 in their game on Tuesday night. Unfortunately for the Tigers, the Eagles connected with the back of the net on a couple of their shots, scoring twice en route to a shutout victory over Marshall at the Red Baron Arena and Expo.

Neither team could find the scoring touch to start, as the game went back and forth throughout the first several minutes. Despite seeing only three shots on goal in the opening period, the Eagles’ Anna Volk was able to find one past the glove of Marshall’s Emma Klenken with 7:18 left to take an early 1-0 lead. Marshall continued to place shots on goal on offense, but couldn’t connect and trailed by a goal at the end of the first.

The second period was similar to the first, with both teams playing physical mixed with moments of offensive action. Windom Area had a golden opportunity to extend its lead midway through the period on a breakaway, but Klenken stood tall in front and earned a great save to maintain the one-goal deficit for the Tigers. Neither team would find scoring in the second, and Marshall went into the third period still down 1-0.

Both teams continued to stay aggressive on offense, as Marshall searched for the equalizer and Windom Area looked to add to its lead. Then with 4:54 left in the game, it was the Eagles who struck again, this time on a slapshot from Molly Boyum on the assist from Abagail Turner to make it 2-0. Marshall had a couple of chances late, but couldn’t find the mark down the stretch.

Klenken finished with eight saves on the game.

Marshall coach Deanna Suby said she was pleased with her team’s effort, especially on the offensive end despite the outcome.

“Both teams came out very hard and the girls had some great passes and played very well offensively,” Suby said. “They were in the zone a lot and did quite well. Windom came out and they were ready to go.”

Suby added their biggest adjustment throughout the game was making sure their passes were on target as well as communicating on the ice.

“We were trying to capitalize on all of their small mistakes, making sure that our passes were on and making sure we knew where we were going,” Suby said. “Communication was key for us.”
