MARSHALL – The Marshall boys hockey team came out of the starting gates at a fast pace and never looked back during their game against Windom Area Tuesday night. A pair of goals from Landon Frost led the way for the Tigers’ offense as they came out with a 5-0 shutout win against the Eagles.

Coming off the win, Marshall coach Michael Weiss was impressed with the team’s effort on defense and how well they have been working together to come out with the win.

“Our play on the defensive zone really stood out to me,” said Weiss. “Anytime you can put a zero on the board is a really good confidence booster. Keeping the other team to the outside and we’re starting to block a few shots and put things together.”

The Tigers stayed focused throughout the entire game, as they took advantage of the ice and kept the puck in the offensive zone for the majority of the first period. Marshall then got on the scoreboard thanks to a goal from Mason Plante on the assist from Jackson Bladholm to take an early 1-0 lead. Defensively the Tigers stayed strong, and with the help of goalie Dominik Caspers, held the Eagles scoreless to end the first period.

Holding a small lead against Windom Area coming into the second period, Marshall didn’t let that affect the way they played on both ends of the ice. Garret Hoff found the net with the assist from Plante to extend the Tigers lead to 2-0 with 12:12 left to play in the period.

Caspers stood tall in front of the goal, making multiple saves to continue to keep the Eagles off the board. Landon Frost then found an opportunity before the period ended to add another one to the Tigers score on another assist from Plante to give Marshall a three-goal lead heading into the final period.

The third period saw a slow start for both teams with little action on offense for the Tigers. The action on the ice would then come alive with a little under four minutes left, thanks to a goal from Chase VanDeVere on the assist from Kaleb Welvaert to extend the Tigers’ lead to 4-0. Then with just 1:46 left on the clock, Frost contributed one final goal for the Tigers on yet another assist from Plante to bring it to the 5-0 final. The shutout marks the second one on the season for the Tigers.

Plante saw a lot of hard work from his team tonight on both sides of the ice and has high expectations as they go on to their next game and the rest of the season.

“We worked hard tonight, last week was a tough week for us playing three teams that are going to be the top three teams in our section,” said Plante. “We can came out tonight not knowing what this team was about and we put it to them right away. Our defense is pretty solid this year, we don’t let too many people by us, they like to shoot and I like that about them.”

The Tigers will be back in action Thursday night at the Red Baron Arena against Redwood Valley at 7 p.m.

Going into their next game Plante looks forward to see what him and his team can do.

“Next game we have another team that is unexpected on how they are going to play; they beat Windom 6-1, and we beat them 5-0,” said Plante. “If we can put the forecheck on them right away and get into their goalies head we can win another game.”
