PREP TENNIS: Marshall tennis earns first win of season in weekend split

MARSHALL – The Marshall tennis team fell to Montevideo 7-0 on Saturday morning, but picked up its first win of the season against Morris Area by a score of 5-2 in the afternoon.

Against Montevideo, Marshall’s Kelsey Boerboom fell to Montevideo’s Kori Douglas 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. At No. 2 singles, Marshall’s Rebekah Bergjord fell to Alissa Eickhoff 1-6, 6-3, 11-9 while Drew Carver of Marshall fell to Lauren Kluver 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 singles. At No. 4 singles, Marshall’s Maddy Penske fell to Tyra Sandven 6-4, 2-6, 10-7.

At No. 1 doubles, the Marshall duo of Ana Schwarz and Rachel VanKeulen fell to Erica and Andrea Loose 6-4, 4-6, 11-9 while Marshall’s Kaitlyn Matzer and Maddie Rowe fell to Elizabeth Padula and Hannah Cushing 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2 doubles. Marshall’s Katie Ewing and Jordyn Ianoye-Guerero fell to Taylor Knutson and Emily Brace 6-4, 6-2 to wrap up the scores.

Against Morris Area, Boerboom fell to Morris’ Lea Asmus at No. 1 singles 6-1, 6-3. At No. 2 singles, Bergjord defeated Morris’ Lilly Swanson 0-6, 6-4, 10-8 while Ewing defeated Morris’ Hannah Wuteke 7-5, 6-3 at No. 3 singles. Penske defeated Morris’ Ryanne Long at No. 4 singles 3-6, 6-4, 14-12.

At No. 1 doubles, Schwarz and VanKeulen fell to Morris’ Abbigal Athey and Greta Hentages 3-6, 6-2, 7-10. At. No. 2 doubles, Rowe and Kaitlyn Matzner defeated Morris’ Katie Messner and Lakia Manska 6-2, 6-2 while Marshall’s Leah Matzner and Kaia Christensen defeated Morris’ Hailey Jackson and Lexie Gomer 6-3, 6-1 to seal the win for the Tigers.

Marshall (1-10) will face Willmar today at 4:30 p.m.
