SMSU ATHLETICS: SMSU Athletics hosts annual Farmer’s Open Golf Tournament on Monday

MARSHALL – The Southwest Minnesota State University Athletics Department and the Marshall Chamber of Commerce, along with title sponsors D&G Excavating, Lockwood Motors, Ralco, Inc., Channel Seeds, Hy-Vee, Titan Machinery, Pulver Towing and McLuaghlin Farms, hosted the annual Farmer’s Open Golf Tournament on Monday at the Marshall Golf Club.

33 teams comprised of 132 golfers participated in the event with proceeds going towards agriculture scholarships for SMSU student-athletes. The tournaments has raised more than $15,000 each year and has contributed over $35,000 to the Farmer’s Open Scholarship Endowment Fund. This year’s scholarship recipient is SMSU men’s basketball player Turner Moen — a senior ag-finance major from Lake Mills, Wis.

The Deutz Auctioneering team of Tim Deutz, Troy Deutz, Val Ebbersbacher and John Larson shot a 54 to win the tournament. The Runnings (Tom Homan, Draper Ray, Roger Evert and Gary Kaczmarek) and CHS (Joel Wiering, Trent Hess, Mitch Nelson and Dan Sprengler) teams tied for second place with a score of 57.

Wally Schultz won the closest to the pin on hole 4, while Johnny Larson knocked in the longest putt on hole 6. Ed Verly was closest to the pin on hole 9, while Val Ebbersbacher was closest on 10. Jeremy Gossen was closest to the pin in two shots on hole 12. Troy Deutz recorded the longest drive of the day on hole 14 and Chris Dahl sunk the longest putt on hole 16.

The SMSU Athletics Department and Director of Athletics, Chris Hmielewski, would like to thank the following Farmer’s Open Committee members for their outstanding work on planning this annual event: Tim Deutz, Pat Hennen, Lucas Hilgemann, Tom McLaughlin, Bill Mulso, Tim Steinbach, Lyle Thiesse and Karen Van Keulen.
