LUVERNE – A four-run first inning from the Luverne Redbirds proved to be the difference Wednesday night at Redbird Field. The Redbirds recorded five hits and scored four runs in the first inning against the Milroy Irish in Game One of their playoff series. That big first inning helped the Redbirds defeat the visiting Irish 10-4 to take the series opener.

The Redbirds picked up four hits and scored two runs before the Irish recorded the first out in the opening frame. Luverne would add two more runs in the inning to take a 4-0 lead.

Milroy got one run back in the top of the second off an RBI single from Dominic Dolan. The Irish appeared to be in store for a quick inning in the bottom half of the inning after starting pitcher Cody Mather set down the first two batters in the inning. Then the Redbirds hit a solo home run to put Luverne up 5-1.

A Brady Lanoue RBI single in the top of the third trimmed Luverne’s lead to 5-2. The Irish stranded a pair of runners in scoring position to end the inning. Mather and the Irish set to the Redbirds in order in the bottom half of the inning.

The Irish scored one run in the top of the fourth off an RBI single from Tyler Patterson. Patterson’s RBI cut Luverne’s lead to 5-3.

After Mather issued a one-out walk, the Irish turned an inning ending double-play to keep the Redbirds off the board.

The Irish had runners on the corners with one out in the top of the fifth inning, but back to back strikeouts kept the Irish from cutting into Luverne’s lead.

The Irish scored one run in the top of the sixth off a Luverne error to make it a 5-4 game. Milroy once again failed to come up with a key hit, as they had runners on the corners with one out in the inning.

The Luverne bats came alive again in the bottom of the sixth, erupting for four runs to take a 9-4 lead. The big blow in the inning came on a two-run home run that forced Milroy to make a pitching change with one out in the inning.

The Irish went down in order in the top of the seventh. Luverne was able to take advantage of a Milroy error and took a 10-4 lead in the bottom half of the inning.

The Irish were unable to mount a rally, as they fell, 10-4.

Tyler Peterson and Tyler Patterson both recorded two hits for the Irish. Derek Riley went 1 for 4 with a double.

The second game of the series will be played Friday at Irish Yard at 7:30 p.m.
