Jesus instructed his disciples before his death, "A new command I give you: Love one another By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." (John13:34-35) The Apostle Paul writes in Galatians 5:14, "the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: "Love your neighbor as yourself." And the Apostle Peter instructs believers, "Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others." Loving others and serving others are to be part of our Christian DNA. They are to be a distinguishing characteristic that will draw others to a vital personal relationship with our Savior and Lord Jesus Christ. Serving and helping others is the way we demonstrate our love for them; and it is a way we demonstrate our love for Christ.
The Wesley and Albright United Methodist churches have been hosting a United Methodist Youth Camp called S.T.O.R.M. (Service to Others in Relational Ministry) Camp this week. Thirty youth from Marshall, Lake City, Inver Grove Heights and Sebeka have been spending this week serving people in Marshall and surrounding communities in the name of Jesus Christ. They have been living out Jesus' command to love one another. The youth have been learning that serving others goes hand in hand with believing in and serving Jesus. They have been challenged to grow in their love for God and service to God by working hard to help people even when they are exhausted and don't want to do any more.
They challenge us to evaluate how we are living out Jesus' command to love one another. They challenge us to not be so concerned about our own comfortability and pleasure but instead about loving Christ and helping others to love Christ. Life is not for our benefit but for how we can love God and others. This is the purpose God created each of us for. Each of us should follow the example of these youth who are sacrificing one week of their summer vacation to make a difference in our lives. But they are just following the example of their Savior Jesus who sacrificed his life to make it possible for all who believe in him to have eternal life. Let us love one another as Jesus has loved us.
