According to the Balaton Centennial book, published in 1992, Balaton had a Chautauqua Day on July 15, 1990, at Lake Yankton. It was estimated that at least 500 people attended the event. The term, "Chautauqua," refers to an adult education movement in the United States, highly popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It was named after Chautauqua Lake, where the first event took place. The Chautauqua assemblies expanded and spread throughout rural America until the mid-1920s, including in Minnesota. The Chautauqua brought entertainment and culture for the whole community, with speakers, teachers, musicians, entertainers, preachers and specialists of the day.
