Southwest Minnesota State University announces that Lauren Hedlund, daughter of Tom and Jane Hedlund of Hinton, Iowa, has been selected to receive a Mentor Scholarship for the 2014-2015 academic year. Recipients of this scholarship are recognized for their academic accomplishments and outstanding leadership abilities.

Her planned major field of study is elementary education.

Winter Festival celebrated at SMSU

Southwest Minnesota State University will celebrate Winter Festival with a series of campus events Jan. 27-Feb. 1. This year's theme is "There's Snow Place Like SMSU."

Winter Festival, formerly known as Winter Meltdown, is an SMSU tradition, a time for students, faculty and staff to participate in fun activities to help beat the "winter blues."

The week is culminated by the traditional Hawaiian Night basketball doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 1, against the University of Minnesota-Crookston. The Mustang women play at 5 p.m., followed by the men at 7 p.m.

Home Free, the all-male country a cappella group, will perform in concert at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan 28, in the R/A Facility. Home Free won NBC's "The Sing Off" competition on Dec. 23. Tickets are available at Hy-Vee, Marshall Radio and the Student Center Mustang Zone. They can also be purchased online at: www.SMSUtickets.com.

The "Nearly Naked Mile & Not-So-Skinny Dip" clothing donation run will take place on Thursday, Jan. 30. Students are encouraged to bring clothes to donate and then run or walk the chilly route around campus. A pool party will be for participants following the run. Registration will be at 7 p.m. in the R/A Facility lobby with the race starting at 7:30 p.m.

Other events this year include the opportunity for students to make personalized snow globes; Minnesota West salon and massage students giving haircuts, massages and manicures; Live at the Landing musical entertainment; movies; and a chance for students to make their own leis.
