Mudcats finish Gopher Classic with 1-3 record

July 15, 2013
Marshall Independent

The Marshall Mudcats faced two of the best teams they've played all season over the weekend and went 0-2 to wrap up play at the Jim Hanus Gopher Classic Legion baseball tournament in Eden Prairie.

Marshall was supposed to play two games Saturday, but heavy rains forced the cancellation of its morning game that was scheduled against Huron (S.D.). The Mudcats played Moline (Ill.) in the afternoon and fell 9-1 in six innings. Marshall closed out the 90-team tournament Sunday with a 10-0 loss to Eden Prairie in seven innings.

The Mudcats finished the tournament with a 3-1 record. They went 1-1 Friday, with their lone win for the tournament coming in a 9-6 victory over Sioux Falls East (S.D.).

Moline was the best team Marshall has seen all year, said Marshall head coach Jeremy Ische. Ische said Moline has five players who are going on to play Division I baseball, and its starter in Saturday's game was Matt Brill, who was selected in the 24th round of the MLB draft by the New York Mets and will play collegiately at Appalachian State.

"This was by far some of the best competition we've seen all year," Ische said. "For our kids to go after a kid that's going to (Appalachian State) and get some good hits... if we could have cashed in on those hits, it could have been a close ballgame.

"That (Moline) team went on to advance to the round of 16 and will play some of the best Legion teams in the country. The games this weekend will definitely prepare us for the playoffs that are coming up."
