The Buffalo Ridge Wildcats closed out the Southern Plains Football League regular season with a dominant 53-0 victory over the Minnesota River Valley Shock Saturday in Lake Benton. They scored all but seven points in the first two quarters of the nine-man game at West Side Field.
Brett Delaney had a near-perfect day through the air for the Wildcats (5-2 overall), completing seven of eight passes for 148 yards and three touchdowns before being taken out of the game with an injury. His top target on the day was T.J. Newgard, who finished the day with five catches for 162 yards and three scores.
Seth Wendland led the Wildcats on the ground, going 61 yards on six carries with a touchdown.
Buffalo Ridge broke open the scoring with its defense, as Travis Lustfield recovered a fumble in the end zone for a score with 4 minutes, 50 seconds left in the first quarter. Newgard snagged a 35-yard touchdown pass from Delaney less than two minutes later and the Wildcats were off and rolling. They exploded for 32 points in the second quarter of the blowout victory.
On defense, Travis Lustfield finished with 11 tackles and Curtis Lustfield had seven tackles, a blocked punt and a sack. James Howe had two interceptions, while Wendland had two fumble recoveries. Newgard also took advantage of the turnover-prone Shock with an interception.
The Wildcats will try to carry their momentum from the lopsided win into the SPFL playoffs, which begin Saturday. Seeded third in the nine-team league, Buffalo Ridge will host the North Iowa Bucks (4-3) at 7 p.m. in Lake Benton.
