GRANITE FALLS - The Yellow Medicine County Board decided to initiate a search for replacements for the positions of human services director and human resources coordinator/finance and administration deputy at its regular meeting on Tuesday.
The human services director position became vacant when Director Peggy Heglund was appointed county administrator. The board agreed with the recommendations of the hiring committee that the position should be posted in-house and only advertised if a suitable candidate is not found internally.
The human resources position will be advertised. Current Human Resources Coordinator Tegan Laleman has accepted a position with the Lyon County Human Resources Department. Her last day at work for Yellow Medicine County was on Tuesday.
In other business, the board voted to accept a lease agreement with Kris Wilke of Porter for use of the track at the county fairgrounds in Canby for drag racing on June 15, for a standard rental fee of $75. Since the county's insurance policy specifically excludes drag racing from coverage, Wilke is required to purchase a minimum of $1.5 million coverage for the event.
The board also approved a lease agreement for the track and facilities with Darrell Regnier for a tractor pull on July 27.
On the recommendation of County Planning and Zoning Director Randy Jacobson, the board approved two conditional use permits for confinement barns with manure pits for pigs in Posen Township.
Brothers Ben and Mike Hinz were granted a permit to build a 51-by-108 foot barn for 2,400 pigs. Dave Schwerin was granted a permit to build a 102-by-200 foot barn for 2,400 finishing hogs.
Both permits were granted on the condition all neighbors within a half-mile radius will be given 24 hours notice before pumping the pits and spreading the manure, and a screen of fast-growing trees will be planted to screen the barns from their neighbors view.
After opening 37 bids, the board accepted the lowest bids in 14 categories of work for the renovation of the former Fagen Building into new county offices.
