Celebrating older Americans

April 27, 2013
By Barb Lipinski - Adult Community Center coordinator , Marshall Independent

Happy May! It is your month to celebrate. That's right it's Older American's month.

Every year since 1963, May has been a month to appreciate and celebrate the vitality and aspirations of older adults and their contributions to our communities. The theme this year for Older Americans month is "Unleash the Power of Age."

It is so fitting.

Older Americans are productive, active and influential members of society, sharing essential talents, wisdom and life experiences with their families, friends and neighbors.

Every day I come to work I see the "Unleashing of the Power of Age." Each and every task or activity is done with your complete vitality - whether you're volunteering, participating, sharing, guiding or asking. I for one, LOVE IT! People often say, "how do you do it?" My No. 1 automatic reply is: "It's so easy! I get to work with them at their best!" Actually at your best of "Unleashing the Power of Age."

Now I challenge you to Spend time with your loved ones and tell them your life experiences.

Often times these are the stories that will live on as your legacy. Share your knowledge and wisdom with them. Your loved ones will cherish your accomplishments and lessons learned, which can also provide guidance for them in their own lives.

Enjoy May - it's your month to shine. Unleash your power of Age.

Talk to you next month!
