Marshall Independent

The Southwest Conference recently announced its all-conference teams for all winter sports, excluding boys' basketball. Athletes representing the Marshall Tigers accounted for 16 of the possible 94 all-conference spots, including honorable mentions.

The Tigers were best represented in girls' hockey with six all-conference nods, while Marshall's boys' hockey and girls' basketball teams each received four all-conference selections. Marshall/Lakeview wrestling saw two grapplers rewarded for their efforts by the conference, while the youthful Marshall gymnastics team was shut out of individual conference awards.

With both Redwood Valley and Marshall qualifying for the state boys' basketball tournament in Class AA and Class AAA, respectively, the conference will announce its boys' basketball all-conference selection following its conclusion.

Girls' basketball

Behind a 24-4 overall record and 12-0 mark in the Southwest Conference, the Marshall girls' basketball team climbed as high as No. 4 in the Class AAA polls. A scrappy defensive team, the Tigers received a vast majority of their scoring from four players, three of whom were named to the All-Conference team, while the fourth picked up an honorable mention.

Juniors Hannah Bennett and Kenzie Beekman, along with senior guard Kelsey Saugstad, picked up all-conference nods for their outstanding seasons. Sophomore guard Sarah Buysse was Marshall's lone honorable mention.

The Tigers had the same amount of all-conference selections as second place Worthington. Luverne and Windom (fourth and third place in the SWC, respectively) had two individuals honored by the conference.

Boys' hockey

Despite a banner year for the Tigers boys' hockey team, which saw them make their first trip to the state tournament in program history, and a first-place split with the Luverne Cardinals; it was Luverne who was rewarded with the lion's share of all-conference accolades.

Marshall and Luverne finished with identical 8-2 records in the conference, each beating the other once during the regular season. The Tigers knocked off the top-seeded Cardinals in the Section 3A quarterfinals 5-3, as well, but

picked up seven all-conference awards to Marshall's four. Luverne's spilt was five all-conference and two honorable mentions, while Marshall was two and two.

Seniors Beau Mikel and Quinn Horvath picked up Marshall's all-conference nods, while fellow seniors Austin Leek and Corey Clark were honorable mentions.

Also honored by the conference were two of the state's top scorers during the season in Windom's Travis Janssen and Morris/Benson's Tanner Picht.

Wrestling

Of the 28 possible all-conference selections for wrestling, just two went to members of the Marshall/Lakeview Tigers.

Justin Varpness, who wrestled at 220 pounds as a senior for the Tigers this season, and school career pin record-holder Austin Nath were honored by the conference for their seasons.

A resurgent year for the program, Marshall/Lakeview also sent two individuals to state in seniors Campbell Hofstetter and Riley Roth.

Jackson County Central led all teams with seven honorees.

Girls' hockey

The Southwest Conference was dominated by the Luverne Cardinals and Marshall Tigers in girls' hockey this past season, and the all-conference awards reflect that. Of the 18 possible all-conference spots, 13 were split between the Cardinals and Tigers.

On the back of its undefeated conference season, Luverne picked up seven all-conference nods while the Tigers nabbed six.

Juniors Lizzie Archbold and Megan Vogl were responsible for the bulk of Marshall's goals this season and were each rewarded with all-conference selections. Sophomore forward Hanna Peterson and senior defenseman Morgan Larsen were also named to the all-conference team for the Tigers, who finished the season with a 9-14-1 overall record.

Sophomores Miranda Fischer (a forward) and Sara Antony (a defenseman) were honorable mentions for the Tigers.
