MARSHALL - Southwest Minnesota University State students Julia Santiago and Missy Mueller are extra busy these days. As members of SMSU Colleges Against Cancer, they are co-chairwomen of the Relay for Life committee and are helping to plan the upcoming Relay for Life, a fundraiser for The American Cancer Society.
Relay for Life will take place at the R/A Facility at SMSU from 3 p.m. April 5 to 3 a.m. April 6. Opening ceremonies are at 7 p.m. and will include introducing the teams and survivors. Young country singer Kayla Daniels, a Tracy Area High School graduate, will sing for about an hour to an hour-and-a-half, said Santiago, a senior history major with a minor in French. Other activities planned include an auction of SMSU athletes to bid on who gets to walk around the track with them.
Among other activities for the evening will be bingo, games, music, a silent auction and one team, Once Upon a Cure, is sponsoring a walk-in movie, "Grease." "Grease" represents the 1950s, which is part of the cancer awareness timeline that the Relay For Life will have, Santiago said.
People have been fundraising and setting up teams.
"There are 15 teams signed up so far," said Mueller, a junior psychology major with a minor in Spanish. "One hundred and forty participants."
Teams that are signed up have names such as Walkamoles, Once Upon a Cure and Too Inspired to be Tired.
"We're still signing up teams," Mueller said. "And it can be individuals as well. You don't have to be on a team."
Santiago has participated in Relay For Life at SMSU for five years now and been a member of Colleges Against Cancer for four years.
"So I'm a veteran," she said.
The event promises to be a good time for a good cause, she said.
"I'm excited," said Santiago. "We always have a good turnout."
Santiago and Mueller encourage the community to come out and support the cause.
"If they want to donate money or donate an auction item, they can go to our Facebook page or call," Santiago said.
