Tiger wrestlers go 0-2 at Mankato West

November 30, 2012
Marshall Independent

Illness and injuries bit the Marshall Tigers wrestling team Thursday at a triangular hosted by Mankato West.

Experienced wrestlers Jared Holland and Nick Erbes both missed the Tigers' first competition of the season with illness, while Campbell Hofstetter, the team's lone representative at the Class AA state tournament last year, hasn't yet recovered from an injured sustained during the football season.

The Tigers lost their opening dual to New Ulm 45-34, then fell to host Mankato West 42-39. Had the Tigers been at full strength, Marshall head coach Justin Bouwman said the results would likely have been different.

"We wrestled pretty well but didn't get the breaks we needed," he said. "We had to put out kids who hadn't wrestled a lot and it showed. If we have Nick and Jared there, it's a different story. That could be a 24-point swing with those two."

Bouwman said he expected to be without Hofstetter to start the season and added that it will still be a little while before the senior captain in back in action, but Bouwman hopes to have the other two wrestlers back when the team travels to Waconia Saturday to compete in four duals.

There were five Tigers who got off to strong starts to their season by winning two matches on Thursday. Heavyweight senior Austin Nath earned first-period pins in both of his matches, as did senior Justin Varpness at 220 pounds. In the lower weights, Marshall's Brent Breczinski also had two pins on the day.

Marshall senior Riley Roth added two wins for the Tigers, taking a 16-6 major decision over New Ulm's Austin Brandes and then earning a pin against Mankato West's Bradley Brown. Ramzi Gregoire was the fifth Tiger to go 2-0. He earned a pin in his first match and claimed a 13-7 decision against Mankato West's Aaron Wall at 152 pounds. The Tigers' Kesmond Willert had two wins, as well, but both were by forfeit.

Bouwman said he couldn't fault the effort of the wrestlers who were able to take the mat for the Tigers on Thursday.

"We bumped up a bunch of guys a weight and they all gave 100 percent," he said. "They went out and they did what they could to help the team."
