Bearcats blow out Mustang women’s basketball team

November 17, 2012
Marshall Independent

It was a brutal start to the Winstead-Reeves Classic for the Southwest Minnesota State women's basketball team Friday night in Maryville, Mo., against tournament host Northwest Missouri State. The Mustangs were dominated in nearly every statistical category, which was reflected in the final score - a 93-46 blowout win in favor of Bearcats.

The Mustangs (0-3 overall) fell behind 7-0 out of the gate and were never close to sniffing the lead. The Bearcats (3-0) owned a 53-21 halftime lead and outscored the Mustangs 40-25 in the second half.

Northwest Missouri State had five players score in double figures in the game, led by Ashleigh Nelson's game-high 18 points on 6 of 9 shooting. SMSU had one player score more than seven points, as guard Bree Holleman went 6-for-8 from 3-point range and scored 16 points.

The disparity in multiple statistical categories was glaring. The Bearcats more than doubled up the Mustangs on the boards, holding a 48-23 rebounding edge. They had more offensive rebounds (18) than SMSU had defensive rebounds (16).

Shooting was another aspect of the game where the Mustangs lagged well behind, as they hit just 32.7 percent of their shots compared to 50 percent for Northwest Missouri State. The Bearcats hit 11 3-pointers in the game, and also had a big advantage in assists, finishing with 19 to SMSU's five.

Turnovers were also an issue for the Mustangs, as they coughed the ball up 27 times. Northwest Missouri State scored 29 points off those turnovers.
