Short takes for Sept. 7

Veterans Wall

THUMBS UP: We're firmly behind the historical society's push for a Veterans Honor Wall at the home of the new Lyon County Museum. The wall, which would be about 40 feet long, is being touted as a changing, flexible military exhibit that would honor local servicepeople. This would be an ideal exhibit at the museum and a definite draw that would pay tribute to those who have sacrificed so much for our country.

Non-profits can't take further cuts

THUMBS DOWN: Whoever among local candidates ends up on top this election, we hope they take a long look at how state funding cuts to the Office of Justice Program have trickled down to southwest Minnesota. In the last couple weeks, the Independent has reported on the results of these cuts and how they will affect non-profits like Women's Rural Advocacy Programs and New Horizons Crisis Center. Both will receive less funding in the near future for the important services they provide because our elected officials chose to balance the budget by taking money away from OJP. Some organizations in southern Minnesota have been forced to close, and more cuts could force more to close up shop.
