The new year at Southwest Minnesota State University (SMSU) is underway with a rebound in our first year class enrollment and a year to prepare for the transition to new leadership. As promised by Chancellor Rosenstone last fall, the search for a new SMSU president began during the summer. The process is expected to conclude in February or March with the appointment of a new SMSU President by the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (MnSCU) Board of Trustees. The search is national in scope and will ensure a thorough vetting of candidates.
The search process began in July with the chancellor's office setting a timeline and agenda for the search process. Minnesota State University, Mankato President Richard Davenport will chair the search advisory committee (SAC). The SMSU campus liaison to the search advisory committee is Deb Almer, Chief Human Resources Officer. The tentative timeline is:
Advertise early September
Form a Search Advisory Committee by mid-September
Chancellor Rosenstone visiting campus in early October
Search Advisory Committee will begin reviewing files in October
Off-campus interviews in mid-November
Campus interviews by the end of January
System office interviews by the middle of February
MnSCU Board of Trustees Presidential appointment in late February
Campus presentation of the new SMSU President in late February or early March
The Search Advisory Committee (SAC) will be comprised of members of the faculty, students, staff, administration, and the community. The SAC is advisory to the Chancellor. Nominations for the SAC will be solicited from each of these groups and be presented by the campus liaison and search chair to the Chancellor for his consideration.
The call for nominations to the SAC will be issued in the next few weeks. The Chancellor will make the final selection of members of SAC.
In early October, Chancellor Rosenstone will travel to the campus to meet with students, faculty, staff, administrators and community members to seek input on the needs of SMSU and the type of individual that would serve the SMSU community well as the new president.
The Chancellor will use the input provided to help ensure that the candidate he recommends to the Board of Trustees is best suited to the needs of the campus and community.
The SAC's primary responsibility will be to identify and interview 6-10 candidates. SAC will provide feedback to the Chancellor on each of the candidates interviewed.
The Chancellor will use this feedback to identify the short list of candidates who will be invited to visit SMSU for on-campus interviews. The SAC chair and the campus liaison, in concert with the system office, will plan the public on-campus interviews.
These interviews will provide an opportunity for all constituent groups to meet with each candidate and provide written input to the Chancellor. The campus visits are anticipated to take place by the end of January.
Following the on-campus visits, the Chancellor and up to three of the members of Board of Trustees will interview the candidates.
Once these interviews are completed (anticipated for late February-March), the Chancellor may recommend a finalist for president of Southwest Minnesota State University to the MnSCU Board of Trustees for their consideration.
If approved by the Board of Trustees, the president-elect will be introduced to the University and Marshall communities shortly thereafter. The anticipated start date for the new president is July 1, 2013.
As you can see it will be a busy year. During the search process, all of us at SMSU will remain focused on serving our students and communities. We deeply appreciate your continued interest and support.
