September is Senior Center Month

August 25, 2012
By Barb Lipinski - Aduclt Community Center Coordinator , Marshall Independent

It's fall, with its splendid display of fall colors. If you have a spare minute, drive by and see our change of colors.

September is Senior Center month across the nation! The theme is: "It happens at My Senior Center My Life, My Time, My Way." This is best captured by two individuals - read their testimonies about their center and their community.

One of the busiest places in Marshall is right in the heart of downtown: The Marshall Area Adult Community Center. Spring, summer, fall or winter, especially Monday through Friday, the activities held there draw from throughout the community, not just seniors, but a mixture of ages because of the breadth of offerings. The Adult Community Center serves a welcoming function for new arrivals to the community.

Every week day afternoon there are card games that attract 50 too 100 people. Those attending are willing to help instruct any novices to learn a new game. Participants can come without worry of bringing a partner because partnerships are arranged on the spot. Further, if persons want to help start some new activity, he/she will have a good audience for recruitment.

Besides card games, there are lectures and discussions for a wide variety of interests: Travelogues, Foreign Student Exchange visitors, Estate planning, identity theft, etc. Diverse age groups participate in such things as a Stamp Club, a Coin Club, chorus practice, book group, dominoes, bean bag toss, wellness activities (including time offered cooperatively with the YMCA), special dinners, etc. The building often is used for individuals hosting birthdays, wedding receptions, anniversaries. The membership helps sponsor: dances, golf outings, lake cruising, woodworking. The membership also gives back to the community by helping with such tasks as organizing coupons and information for college students and helping stuff envelopes or fold announcements for various non-profit organizations in the community.

I feel so fortunate to be a retired person and live in the city of Marshall.

Marshall has so many businesses that make our city so colorful with their flower beds each summer.

It is a city you have to be proud of with our new murals on the brick wall on 4th Street and the one on 3rd Street and the future one to be done on main and college drive. They identify the great interest and participation of our people of this city for the arts, sports, music, etc.

There are many amenities in Marshall, YMCA, many parks, swimming pool, churches, etc and a great Adult Community Center, which I am proud to be a member. We have many opportunities to serve this community, we fold luminaries for Relay for Life, prepare newsletters for local organizations, sort coats for Coats for Kids, put together welcome bags for the college freshman, computer classes, book club and gifts made for Heart to Heart.

Many different card games are played also Bingo, cribbage, dominos, billiards, and bean bag Monday thru Friday.

The Adult Community Center is the bright rustic colored building at 107 south 4th street and we are always happy to have new members, if you are 55 and older we would love to have you join us. It is a fun, friendly place to be a member, our motto is"Home Away from Home." It truly has been that for me, at my age I feel so good and happy to be an active part of this community, and able to do many of these volunteer services.
