Thank a nurse

June 30, 2012
By Barb Dorn - March of Dimes SW Division Director , Marshall Independent

From the very youngest of patients in newborn intensive care units to the elderly in hospice, nurses protect our health, work to prevent injury, alleviate suffering and advocate for our care.

They serve on the front line of patient care, providing the ill, injured and their families with a calm and comforting presence during times of need, and the March of Dimes would like to say "thank you" to all those who work in the nursing profession.

Dating all the way back to the polio era, nurses have played a critical role in advancing the mission of the March of Dimes. More than 40,000 nurses volunteered for the Salk polio vaccine field trials in 1954, the largest medical investigation of its kind ever conducted. The dedication of these nurses is one of the reasons the vaccines effectively ended epidemic polio in the United States.

Today, nurses across the country continue to serve as volunteers, fundraisers and advisors to the March of Dimes. Our mission is simple: to improve the health of babies, and nurses play a critical role in caring for moms and supporting families. So we are providing an opportunity to honor the selflessness, dedication, and passion these individuals hold for the profession of nursing through our Nurse of the Year Awards to be held on Oct. 27.

This event will celebrate nursing excellence and recognize leaders in nursing from across the state of Minnesota, including southern Minnesota and the Marshall area. But first they must be nominated!

Therefore, patients, families and colleagues are now encouraged to nominate nurses in 15 categories including Distinguished Nurse of the Year. Other categories include Advanced Practice, Care Management, Education & Research, Leadership, Mental Health, Neonatal, Pediatric, Perioperative, Public Health/School Nurse, Rising Star, Rural Health, Staff Nurse General Care, Staff Nurse Critical Care, and Women's Health. There is no fee to submit a nomination and you may submit a completed form for as many different individuals as you wish.

So please, honor the nurses who have touched your life by nominating them today for the Nurse of the Year Awards. Deadline for submittals is July 15, and nomination forms can be found at

If you have any questions contact or call 952-835-3033. Make the time to thank a nurse!
