Jacob David Eastman was born in Benton, Maine, on Oct. 13, 1845. He moved to Lyon County in 1878, and he was a resident here until his death on April 23, 1922. The following information is from his obituary, which was published in the Marshall News-Messenger:

In 1861, when President Lincoln issued his first call for volunteers, Mr. Eastman was too young to enlist, but when nineteen years of age he enlisted on December 16, 1864, in Company G, 8th Regiment California Infantry. He left Maine at once for San Francisco, going by the way of the Isthmus of Panama. He was stationed at Fort Point, California, from which he was honorably discharged, October 24, 1865. After the war, he returned to Maine and took up farming. On Oct.ober 24, 1875, he was married to Miss Abbie J. Dixson.

In 1878, Jacob and Abbie moved to Minnesota and located on a farm near Lake Marshall where they made their home for eleven years before moving to Marshall. In Marshall, Mr. Eastman was engaged in the carpentry trade and for many years he was janitor at the Marshall High School. Mr. Eastman was a member of D.F. Markham Post, Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) and the Yeoman Lodge in Marshall. At his funeral, nine G.A.R. comrades were able to attend. At the time of his death, he was survived by Mrs. Eastman, one daughter, Mrs. Alice Peterson, and one son, Charles W. Eastman along with three grandchildren.
