Variety of special columns makes the Independent unique

To the editor:

The Marshall Independent newspaper is unique in having a variety of special columns in addition to reporting news. During the past year when many places were not open for social gatherings, I realized that these special columns helped to keep us connected.

Jody Mohr reports on books she has read in her “Books and Beyond” column. Ron Skiong serves philosophical thoughts along with descriptions of various wines. Jerry Nelson adds humor to his love of farming and family, Bill Palmer presents local people and history in “Prairie View”, “On the Porch” by Jennifer, Andries, director of the Lyon County Historical Society, gives a picture and story of many people and places in Lyon County.

People who garden can read articles by Stephane Bethke-DeJaeghere, master gardener, Jim Muchlinski contributes articles of interest on the Opinion page, and Nick Simonson introduces us to “The Great Outdoors.”

Thank you to all these writers and to the Independent staff for including them. My visiting children have also commented on how interesting our paper is.
