Independent article draws attention to intersection safety concerns

To the editor:

I would like to thank the Independent staff for taking time to cover our meeting with the Department of Transportation regarding the intersection at Highway 23 and Lyon Street.

Those who work near and use this intersection virtually daily appreciate the safety concerns that it holds.

Many of our most vulnerable in the community pass through this intersection daily (schoolchildren, elderly, wheelchair bound, etc.). This corner is special in that much of the area, especially on the east side, has yet to be developed. Whether that area brings commercial or residential growth is not known yet, but we hope the Minnesota Department of Transportation has the vision to see that this corner will probably experience substantial traffic growth and the type of intersection constructed needs to take the long term view of what it will look like in 15 to 25 years.

Since the article in the Independent, I was very surprised at the number of people who have stopped to visit with me or contacted me in the hopes we are successful in having a roundabout installed.

If you have concerns about the future safety of that corner, please contact Ryan Barney, project management engineer, at ryan.barney@state.mn.us.

Every voice matters.
