Short Takes

Trump’s plan is reasonable, but …

THUMBS SIDEWAYS:

President Donald Trump’s three-phased plan to get the nation back on its feet economically is a reasonable plan. The new guidelines are aimed at easing restrictions in areas with low transmission of the coronavirus, while holding the line in harder-hit locations. It was important that he told the governors “You’re going to call your own shots.” However, there was one important element missing from his guidelines — leading the testing. The guidelines call for robust testing before phase one, but the federal government needs to lead that effort. Without a more unified effort in testing, more incidents like at the Smithfield plant in Sioux Falls, S.D., will keep on plaguing major industries involving hundreds of employees.

Working to protect us

THUMBS UP:

We know nurses and other medical workers in our area medical centers and senior care facilities are wearing medical masks. But in many cases they are also wearing full-face shields. They work full shifts with this extra personal protective equipment on. They do this to protect themselves and the patients. If you know a health care worker, give them a big thanks for their efforts.

City officials go the extra mile

THUMBS UP:

Trying to keep everybody happy can be difficult at times. Just ask the city engineering department for the city of Marshall. The City Council on Tuesday struggled to come up with a compromise on the planned street and utility project on South First Street. Council members heard complaints from residents about additional sidewalks and making the street narrower. You have to give credit to the Council to spending the time to address the concerns. The project was sent back to the city engineering department for possible changes.
