Good news for higher education

There have been a lot of recent positive developments in Southwest Minnesota when it comes to higher education.

It was just a week ago that it was reported both Southwest Minnesota State University and Minnesota West Community and Technical College ranked among the top schools when it comes providing educational opportunities for those who’ve served their country in the military.

On Tuesday, another positive development was reported by Minnesota West. The institution — with campuses in Canby, Granite Falls and Marshall — hit a five-year high in enrollment. The college reported a 4 percent positive growth in the spring of 2019 and showed an overall growth of 2 percent in the 2018-19 academic year.

In press release remarks, Minnesota West President Dr. Terry Gaalswyk explained the significance of the enrollment increase.

“Our college has been strategically focused with our industry and high school partners in connecting students with great careers,” he said.

But more importantly, Gaalswyk said, “We know that over the next 10 years, the Minnesota economy will need to fill over 1 million jobs.”

It’s no secret the job market is changing. Manufacturing jobs that only require a high school diploma are vanishing. Companies need workers with technical skills. And a lot of these companies are finding it difficult finding workers with those needed skills. And it’s not just manufacturing. Most of our plumbers and electricians are retiring.

It appears Minnesota West is stepping up to help train people of all ages fill that void.
