Lyon County hunters express concerns

THUMBS DOWN:

There appears to be a disconnect somewhere between those who are responsible for forming the deer harvesting plan for the state of Minnesota and the actual hunters. Well, at least the hunters in Lyon County. The Department of Natural Resources hosted an open house on Monday and about 20 hunters showed up. DNR officials praised the hunters because they said very few hunters show up at other open houses held throughout the state. The comments directed at the DNR officials centered on one theme: The number of deer is decreasing. They were all wondering how the state could increase the amount of deer that can be harvested in the state to 200,000. Many in attendance recommended shortening the deer hunting season so the deer get a chance to mature. The DNR officials urged the hunters to contact their state legislators. Let’s hope these legislators are listening because deer are a valuable asset to the state’s outdoor industry that pumps many dollars into the economy.
