Short Takes

Investing in the youth of the region

THUMBS UP:

Some important investments were made in southwest Minnesota this past week.

On Tuesday, nearly 50 third-graders and officials from the city and various agencies were on hand at the Red Baron Arena & Expo to celebrate a $50,000 grant from the Minnesota Super Bowl Host Committee Legacy Fund to build a new park near the Schwan Regional Amateur Sports Center Ballpark. This is an investment for the well being of our youth and quality of life. Also on Tuesday, the Yellow Medicine County Board voted 3-2 to approve a $25,000 donation to the Cardinal Kids Daycare program in Clarkfield. Parents dealing with daycare shortages will appreciate this investment. Then on Wednesday, Marshall Public Schools was the beneficiary of a $10,000 “Super School Breakfast” grant from the Minnesota Super Bowl Host Committee Legacy Fund. The money was actually received by the district almost a year ago and was used to buy $9,200 worth of refrigerated coolers and carts.

Bummer, time to bundle up

THUMBS DOWN:

Winter so soon. The weather forecast in southwest Minnesota calls for snow today. Temperatures are expected to dip down to the low 20s tonight.

‘You Were My Thrill’

THUMBS SIDEWAYS:

Here’s a salute to R&B singer Fats Domino who died Tuesday at age 89. Domino had more than three dozen top 40 pop hits through the 1950s and early ’60s. Among them were “Blueberry Hill” and “Ain’t That a Shame.” He sold 65 million singles and was awarded 23 gold records.
