Short Takes

Voters support school referendum

THUMBS UP:

Bond referendums usually set off heated debates in communities. There is always the need vs. the cost. It was no different in Minneota for the past several months as registered voters mulled over the need to upgrade school district infrastructure. The cost would not be cheap for the community — $5.25 million. Voters decided Tuesday that the cost was worth it for the betterment of students in the community. The referendum passed 424 to 251. Not a landslide, but a statement that voters believe their school district officials are making the right decisions.

Lincoln County deals with suit threat

THUMBS SIDEWAYS:

Lincoln County commissioners held a closed session on Tuesday to discuss a lawsuit threat. The threat is over a box culvert contract. The company that lost out in the bidding process sent the count a letter stating it may file a lawsuit. The county board has identified a law firm to defend it if a lawsuit is filed.

Sounds of Summer successful event

THUMBS UP:

The Sounds of Summer celebration was successful in getting members of the community to come together to celebrate the summer season. While the weather didn’t cooperate for Friday’s activities, sunshine on Saturday allowed for a grand time. The parade drew hundreds of people along the route that finished in the downtown area. The day was capped off with a pretty good show by Time Machine. Other festivals in surrounding communities — Milroy, Echo, Porter and Wood Lake — were also successful in drawing big crowds.

Lost a pioneer of comedy

THUMBS UP:

The passing of showman Jerry Lewis Sunday no doubt was mourned by many who live in southwest Minnesota. The 91-year-old comedian was a pioneer in comedy and entertained people throughout the world for decades. “The world has lost a true innovator & icon,” comedian Dane Cook wrote. That pretty much sums it up.
