Janis Kaye Brockhouse

Janis Kaye Brockhouse was born on May 30, 1941 to Hubert and Ella (Oldenberg) Schrunk in Marshall, Minnesota.  She grew up on the family farm and helped care for the animals and do the field work.  She liked being outdoors and helping her dad.  She attended school in Russell, graduating high school in 1959.  She was united in marriage to Edward Brockhouse, in Pipestone, Minnesota.  They lived in Ihlen, Minnesota and after a couple years moved to Ward, South Dakota.  In 1978 the family moved to Lake Benton, Minnesota where they have lived ever since. They ran a trucking company and she was the bookkeeper for the business.  Most importantly, she was a brilliant housewife and mother.  Janis passed away suddenly on Saturday, March 18, 2023 at the Avera McKennan Hospital and UHC in Sioux Falls, South Dakota after a short time there.

Janis was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Lake Benton where she was a past Sunday School Teacher and volunteered with the Ladies Aid as well.  She mentored in the Lake Benton School, was on the Board for the Lake Benton Opera House, and also collected for the Community Chest.  Janis loved raising and breeding horses.  She liked dancing, snowmobiling, cruising around on the 4-wheeler, riding motorcycle, camping with family, and old car tours.  She also liked to travel, going to Alaska and on a cruise were some highlights that she loved to look back on.  She loved time spent at their cabin in the Black Hills with family. She enjoyed cooking and baking and made sure everyone had food and plenty of it.

Janis was a visitor.  She liked to talk, tell stories, and would light up the room with her infectious smile and laughter.  She was a beautiful lady who could talk to anyone.  Her vibrant personality will be missed.  She loved her grandchildren and travelled often to see them participate in their various activities.

Janis is lovingly remembered by her husband, Ed of Lake Benton; children, Cindy “Sara” (David) Hillestad of Ellsworth, Minnesota, Keven (Becky) Faaborg of Ward, South Dakota, Cheryl (Jeff) Wilson of Hartford, South Dakota, Merlyn (Lori) Brockhouse of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Loren (Whitney) Brockhouse of Des Moines, Iowa, Cheryl (Rick) Vos of Tyler, Minnesota, Steve Brockhouse of Grand Forks, North Dakota, Howard Brockhouse of Middle River, Minnesota, Bradley (Sandra) Brockhouse of Keystone, South Dakota, and Ryan (AnnMarie) Brockhouse of Princeton, Minnesota; grandchildren, Elizabeth (Sammy) Hutchison, Christy (Zach) Norgaard, Bryan Faaborg, Brandon (McKenna) Faaborg, Jeremiah (Erin) Brockhouse, Lindsey (Alex) Palmer, Megan (Nelson) Cooper, Grant (Hannah) Brockhouse, Aspen Brockhouse, Shawn (Katy) Vos, Kristopher (Kayla) Vos, Robbyn (Matt) Kerkaert, Abigail Brockhouse, Isabella Brockhouse, Joshua Brockhouse, Cody (Allison) Brockhouse, Connor Brockhouse, Caden Brockhouse, Rachael Brockhouse, and William Brockhouse; great-grandchildren, Jeffy Hutchison, Ethan Hutchison, Corbyn Faaborg, Camryn Faaborg, Able Faaborg, Hoss Faaborg, James Brockhouse, Benton Brockhouse, Gage Brockhouse, Jayden Vos, Tucker Vos, Tyson Vos, Avery Vos, Haydyn Vos, Jackson Kerkaert, Justin Kerkaert, and Jettison Kerkaert; one sister, Margaret Clark of Austin, Minnesota; sister-in-law, Geri Halma of Nashville, Tennessee; and one brother-in-law, Butch Brockhouse of Sioux Falls, South Dakota.  She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Geneva (Boyd) Seaton, Rolland (Ann) Schrunk, Robert Clark and LaVonne (Louis) Otto; daughter-in-law, Peggy Brockhouse; and mother- and father-in-law, Henry and Teresa Brockhouse.
