Avis Nelson

May 19, 1926-Sept. 30, 2020

TYLER — Services will be held on Wednesday, Oct 7, 2020, 10:30 a.m., visitation one hour prior, at the Tyler Alliance Church.

Avis Nelson was born May 19, 1926 to Grant and Anna Forseth, Johnson in Brookings County, South Dakota. She was baptized and confirmed at her parent’s church, First Lutheran Church in Hendricks Minnesota.

She attended county school in Brookings County and graduated from Hendricks High School, Hendricks, Minnesota. After graduating from Swedish Hospital School of Nursing in Minneapolis she worked at the Hendricks Hospital and then in Portland.

In 1950 she was married to Pastor Justin Torgrimson. Together they served parishes in Kirkland, Washington, Oconto, Wisconsin, Bloomington, and Sioux City. Justin Torgrimson died in 1980 after an extended illness. Avis went to work at Lake Haven Nursing Home in Worthington. In 1988 Avis married Donald Nelson and moved to Tyler, where she has resided. Avis was an active member of First English Church in Tyler. Donald Nelson died January 20 2012.

She is survived by Avis’ children; Naomi Rassmussen (Glen) of Wessington Springs, Ivar Torgrimson (Joanne) of Omaha, Miriam Jensen (Greg) Tyler, Priscilla Fischer (Bruce) of Rochester, Daniel Torgrimson (Martha) of Albuquerque, and Step son Lon Nelson (Carol) of Bloomington, Brother; Quentin Johnson (Leola).

She also leaves to mourn 10 grandchildren, 2 step grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, 8 step great grandchildren.

Avis was preceded in death by her two husbands, parents, 2 brothers, 4 sisters and 2 grandchildren.

One thing Avis loved more than anything was the Lord Jesus Christ.
