She died Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2018, at Boulder Creek Assisted Living in Marshall.

Mera Luceil Petersen was born Oct. 30, 1919, in Shaokatan Township, near Lake Benton. She was the daughter of Knute and Carrie (Hansen) Petersen. Mera Luceil was baptized and confirmed at Diamond Lake Lutheran Church, rural Lake Benton, and attended country school. She graduated from Lake Benton High School in 1937.

On Sept. 4, 1938, Mera Luceil was united in marriage to Lloyd John Johnson. The couple made their home and farmed near Lake Benton, Tyler, and Marshall. Mera Luceil was a devoted farmer’s wife who cared for the house and her five children. In 1963, the family moved to Marshall; at that time she began her career working at Kelco and B&H Electronics.

Mera Luceil had a gifted artistic flair. She enjoyed painting ceramics, attending craft fairs with her husband, sewing, and embroidery. She enjoyed cooking and baking for her family, a good game of Solitaire, and she and Lloyd spent many years traveling with the Holiday Ramblers. They also enjoyed dancing and visits to the casino.

Mera Luceil spent her final years at Boulder Creek memory care (as their first resident in 2013) with a smile on her face, a warm embrace, and love in her heart. She loved the staff and was grateful for the care she received. She was called to Heaven by her Savior on Nov. 27, 2018, during a peaceful sleep. Mera Luceil had celebrated her 99th birthday just 28 days prior. Blessed be her memory.

Mera Luceil is survived by her four children, daughter-in-law, Evelyn Johnson of Ortonville; Connie (and Ed) Matthys of Durango, Colo., Lonnie (and Sharyn) Johnson of Phoenix, Ariz., Kathy Paxton of Marshall, Becky (and Paul) Verly of Longmont, Colo.; 14 grandchildren, Rick, Gayle, Dan, Tom, Tamara, Terry, Todd, Brad, Aron, Zachariah, Tabitha, Isaac, Chad and Scott; 23 great-grandchildren; brother, Arlyn (and Garnet) Petersen of Lake Benton; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd; son, Gary; one precious soul lost to miscarriage; son-in-law, John Paxton; great-grandson, Lincoln Verly; parents, Knute and Carrie Petersen; sisters, Irene Lahey, Bernice Johannsen, and Rosie Rydell.

In lieu of flowers, please direct memorials to the family. They are consolidating gifts to be donated toward a special project at Boulder Creek Assisted Living in Marshall. The family of Mera Luceil would like to acknowledge the staff at Boulder Creek for the special care and kindness they provided to our mom. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
