Hugh Kerr

MARSHALL — Services for Hugh Kerr, 84, of Marshall will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hamilton Funeral Home in Marshall. Burial will follow in the Marshall Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service, from 10-11 a.m., on Wednesday at Hamilton Funeral Home in Marshall.

He died Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2018, at Sylvan Court, Sanford Health Center in Canby.

Hugh John Kerr was born Sept. 21, 1933, to George and Anna (Wischer) Kerr on their family farm in Lawton, North Dakota. Hugh’s family moved to rural Lyon County when he was a toddler. Hugh attended country school and went on to graduate from Lynd High School.

Hugh served in the United States Army from 1954 until 1956. He then returned home and met Elizabeth DeVos. The two were married April 4, 1959. They were blessed with 6 children. Hugh owned and operated his own business, Kerr’s Shoe Repair, opening in 1970.

In 1991, Hugh married Carol Darling. The couple closed the shoe repair shop and decided to explore the country and travel the US. They lived in Georgia, Arizona, and Las Vegas, Nevada.

Hugh’s interests in life were painting, playing cards, watching sports on TV and spending time with family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Carol of Canby; six children, Kerry Kerr of Marshall, Anna (Michael) Jennings of Watertown, S.D., Darlene (Steve) Allen of Marshall, Richard (Linda) Kerr of Minneota, Nancy Kerr (Don Myhre) of Sioux Falls, S.D., Chad Kerr of Marshall; step-daughter, Denise Catalano of Brandon, Florida; 10 grandchildren, Jessica (Dude) Myhre, Megan (Grant) Giefer, Wesley (Mariah Schelhaas) Jennings, Lindsey (Lance Hinsvark) Jennings, Lauren (Travis) Ellingson, Olivia (Charles M) Holcomb, Colin Allen, Kristie Illingworth, Kimberly Illingworth, Natasha Myhre; six great-grandchildren, Aubree, Maddie, Brayden, Reed, Rhett, Charles J; siblings, Duane (Barbara) Kerr of Russell, James “Jim” (Elaine) Kerr of Tyler, George Kerr of Las Vegas Nevada, Margaret Mitchell of Canby; sisters-in-law, Marianne Kerr of Fulda, Helen Kerr of Cornville, Arizona, Beverly Kerr of Lennox, S.D.; first wife, Elizabeth DeVos of Marshall; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Hugh is preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Warren Kerr, Walter Kerr, and Albert Kerr; stepson, Len Avery; and brother-in-law, Frank Mitchell.
